I never got into the habit of using the voice-to-text services on my Android phone or iPhone, so it's hard for me to say which is better. Both were generally reliable. Shouldn't Siri be better than my experience with Android because its two two years newer? Probably, but besides doing things like transcribing "juice" as "Jews" and a few completely random guesses she's made, she is more advanced in that she's better at parsing natural language. (I never could remember what the difference between commanding Android to "call" and to "dial" was.) That's no small thing, but clearly Siri screws up a lot.

As someone who has switched from Android to iOS, I would be interested in your take on Boris' claim, "it’s probably the best voice recognition on any mobile platform."

The performance I get out of Android's voice recognition is always impressive. It doesn't let me tell it to write a text or read my calendar, but when I use it in place of the keyboard, it manages to correctly transcribe what I say most of the time, even fairly complex sentences.

Harvey, the answer is: you don't. I would love to be able to add my Google Reader subscriptions to it, though.

Adam: I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I think you should have put the story on the front page. If it is being used legitimately, i.e. a direct quote, then it belongs, no matter how offensive it may be.

I think there's a difference between running "fucking faggot" in a hed and in the copy. And a difference between running it in the lede and in the fourth graf.

How important is the story? How important is the quote to the story? How important is the potentially offensive phrase to the quote?

Writing about a book titled "Go the Fuck to Sleep" without using the word "fuck" seems ridiculous to me. In your case, it's the sixth graf of a story about the slur. I would have argued for running the full quote if I was going to run any of it.

Whether the front page was appropriate or not, that's about the story's importance. I don't know that I would have made that decision based solely on the word.
